TE Whare Manaaki PROJECT

Restoring Hope to Waikato Kaumatua and their Whānau
Help Us to create healthy homes for Waikato Kaumatua

Since 1986 Te Whakaruruhau Waikato Women’s Refuge has put the wellbeing and safety of Waikato women and their children first with a 24 x 7, seven-day-a-week wraparound crisis service.

First responders and fast responders, Te Whakaruruhau’s hard work has earned them the trust and the respect of the Waikato community. Now they are asking for your HELP with their Whare Manaaki Project.

Does an unhealthy home live next door to you?

More than ever, Waikato whānau are experiencing poverty-related conditions such as food insecurity, unhealthy homes, poor physical and mental health, financial debt, addiction and more. To eliminate domestic violence and intergenerational disadvantage in our community, we must face into and help eliminate poverty as a community.

Once you see poverty, you can’t un-see it

Coming face to face with kaumatua and their mokopuna washing themselves in buckets, having no functioning toilet, or insulation was the catalyst for Te Whakaruruhau’s Whare Manaaki Project.

The goals of te Whare Manaaki project

”My mokos and I don’t need to use a bucket to wash ourselves in, we have a real shower. When my whanau visited some of them cried and couldn’t stop asking what happened. We’ve been assessed by other groups who said they could help repair our home but they didn’t come back, like that’s 2 years ago. We are so lucky it’s just unbelievable.”

“I can open my windows now, I can’t believe it. We can use our toilet after 10 years of not being able to flush it. I can cook for all my mokos now that I have 5 elements working and a large stove that can cook for all of them. I sleep better in my Assist chair, the home is so warm. We are so blessed and grateful for what’s happened to us. There’s a lot of older ones like us who are cold in their homes. No one can help them. You have to take out loans, and when you’re a pensioner I don’t know how you manage to pay that back, we can’t work now. Just blessed and grateful. I don’t know how we can ever repay you and tell you, our home is now safe and healthy for our mokos.”
